Crestwood Intermediate School (CIS) will feature student and teacher talent show for parents and community members on November 15, 2013 at 6 pm. The show will offer a way for the community to come together to support students as they display their talents and to raise money for the family of CIS student, Mathieu Arotin.
Mathieu Arotin, currently a 5th Grade student, has a disease called Spinal Muscular Atrophy (SMA) type II. Due to this disease, Mathieu is confined to a power wheelchair. The wheelchair gives him the ability to play with his friends, go to school, travel around his home, and go to many doctors appointments. His family’s current 2004 Chevy Venture van cannot be modified to accommodate Mathieu’s wheelchair, leaving his family to utilize a suitcase ramp to stow his chair. His wheelchair often becomes stuck in the loading or unloading process, requiring more than one adult to free. Mathieu must also be physically lifted into the car seat when traveling. For his safety, and that of his parents, the Arotin Family is looking for a wheelchair accessible van that will allow Mathieu to be transported without the need to leave his chair.
This event is being organized by Crestwood Girl Scout Troops 243, 533, 442 and 732, many of whom are classmates and friends of Mathieu. After learning of the Arotin Family’s need last year, the troops created and sold friendship bracelets in the spring, raising over $700 towards a wheelchair accessible van. The Troop members are seeking help from the community to make this fundraiser an even bigger success. Donations of concession foods and beverages, baked goods, gift baskets or certificates to raffle, would be greatly appreciated. Direct monetary donations to the Mathieu Arotin van fund can be made at any Woodforest National Bank branch, including the branch located within the Aurora Wal-Mart.
In addition to the Talent Show, the November 15th event will include concessions, bake sale and basket raffle with all proceeds going towards the Mathieu Arotin van fund. Admission to the CIS All-School Talent Show will be $2. The program begins at 6 pm in the school cafeteria.
