DETROIT (AP) -- The American Federation of Teachers is getting its hands dirty at an urban agriculture event ahead of its convention in Detroit.
The union on Thursday plans a "healthy living through healthy foods" event at a community garden set up by Detroit-based nonprofit Urban Farming. There will be demonstrations about starting a garden, vegetable harvesting and cooking healthy foods.
AFT members will be among the volunteers. Some will help harvest and weed. And free books will be handed out to area children.
The convention opens Friday and runs through Monday at downtown's Cobo Center. Vice President Joe Biden is scheduled to speak Sunday.
The union represents teachers in the Detroit Public Schools. It bargains for 1.5 million teachers and is the nation's second-largest teachers union.
