Avalanche levels Montana house

MISSOULA, Mont. -- Police say an elderly couple is missing and an 8-year-old boy has been rescued after an avalanche destroyed a house in the western Montana city of Missoula.

Police Sgt. Travis Welsh says the boy was taken to a hospital after the Friday avalanche, but his condition wasn't known.

Welsh says an elderly couple lived in the home that was destroyed and their whereabouts are unknown.

He says the couple's cars were in the driveway, and police believe they were inside when the avalanche hit.

Welsh says police don't know if the boy lived in the house.

A natural gas leak has also been reported in the area.

The avalanche struck at about 4 p.m. in a northeastern Missoula neighborhood at the foot of Mount Jumbo.
