COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- A former Democratic state representative has been elected to a new Ohio congressional district in Columbus.
Joyce Beatty (BAY'-tee) beat Republican Chris Long on Tuesday to take the seat in the Democrat-leaning U.S. House district.
The 3rd Congressional District was specifically drawn with a concentration of black voters after minority lawmakers objected to a revised Ohio political map that came out last year.
Beatty, who is black, was the favorite in the race after she knocked off former U.S. Rep. Mary Jo Kilroy in the Democratic primary.
Beatty is a former Democratic leader in the Ohio House and had the backing of Columbus Mayor Michael Coleman.
She served four terms in the Ohio House, including a stint as Democratic leader.
