LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) -- David Minaya scored 20 points and Jesse Sanders had a double-double to lead Liberty over Virginia Military Institute 78-69 on Tuesday night.
The Flames (12-16, 7-9 Big South Conference) outscored VMI 22-8 in the paint in the first half, helping them take a 41-26 lead at the break. Liberty shot 61.3 percent in the first half (19 of 31).
Minaya led a strong shooting night, going 10 of 17 from the field. Liberty made 57.1 percent of its field goals for the game (32 of 56), helping to overcome 17 turnovers and a poor shooting night from the line. The Flames made 52.2 percent from the stripe (13 of 23).
Sanders, who had 16 points and 13 rebounds, was the lone bright spot on the free-throw line, going 4 of 4.
The Keydets (12-12, 7-7) were led by Stan Okoye with 21 points and 12 rebounds.
