Ghana's Ayew out of African Cup of Nations

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates (AP) -- Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah says he will not pick Andre Ayew in his squad for the African Cup of Nations after the Marseille winger failed to report to a training camp to have an injury assessed.

Appiah says in a statement on Monday that he had decided to "exclude" Ayew, one of Ghana's best players, because of uncertainty over his fitness after he picked up a hamstring injury with his French club.

Ayew was asked to report to Ghana's pre-tournament camp in the United Arab Emirates on Saturday but still had not arrived by Monday morning, despite being released by Marseille.

Appiah says Ayew will not arrive in time to have his fitness assessed before Wednesday's deadline for African Cup squads and will not be considered for the Jan. 19 - Feb. 10 tournament.
