COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) -- Columbus police say their helicopter unit is the first law enforcement agency in the county to receive full accreditation from a national organization.
The Airborne Law Enforcement Accreditation Commission Inc. recently notified the division of its accomplishment.
Assessors from the commission evaluated the helicopter unit on its compliance with more than 70 standards in several categories, including maintenance, operations, safety and training. The unit had to be compliant to be considered for accreditation.
A police spokesman tells The Columbus Dispatch (http://bit.ly/xtkyib ) the unit operates six helicopters.
Its members also received a $5,000 scholarship award from the accreditation commission last weekend.
