LANCASTER, Ohio (AP) -- Authorities continue their search for an inmate who apparently escaped from a southeast Ohio jail facility by using socks to protect his hands as he climbed a barbed wire fence.

The Logan Daily News reports Wednesday that the Hocking County Sheriff says a man fitting the suspect's description knocked on a resident's door Monday night, asked to use the phone and was turned away.

The Fairfield County Sheriff says inmate Jeremiah Searles was discovered missing shortly before midnight Monday. The 31-year-old was being held on a Missouri warrant for deviant sexual assault and local charges including obstruction, falsification, criminal trespass and narcotics possession.

The sheriff tells The Columbus Dispatch he's looking into whether a felony sex offender belonged at the minimum-security site and tells WBNS-TV he's reviewing whether neighbors were properly notified.
