CINCINNATI (AP) -- Republican Rep. Jean Schmidt has an early lead over four challengers as she seeks nomination for her bid for a fourth full term.
Schmidt topped a field that included an Iraq war veteran who ran a high-profile race. With 16 percent of precincts reporting unofficial returns, Schmidt had 50 percent of the total, with Brad Wenstrup running second with 41 percent. The others were far behind.
Two Democrats vied for the nomination to oppose her in the southern Ohio district that stretches east from Cincinnati into Appalachia. She was first elected in a 2005 special election to succeed Rob Portman. Portman is now a U.S. senator.
