NEW CASTLE, Pa. (AP) -- State police say an Ohio man fatally shot himself after holding firefighters at bay who arrived to battle a blaze at the home of the man's ex-girlfriend in western Pennsylvania.
Trooper Harry Gustafson tells reporters that 53-year-old Ronald Covert, of Negley, Ohio, pointed a shotgun and refused to let North Beaver Township firefighters near the house Sunday afternoon.
When state police arrived a short time later, Gustafson says Covers shot himself.
A state police fire marshal is investigating the blaze and trying to determine if Covert set the fire before killing himself.
Police say the woman who lived in the home had previously gotten a protection from abuse order against Covert.
North Beaver Township is located about 45 miles northwest of Pittsburgh, near the Ohio border.
