Pest control firm donates cockroaches for study

TROY, Mich. (AP) -- More than 1,000 Madagascar hissing cockroaches will be given to elementary schools and children's organizations in Michigan, Ohio and Indiana to increase interest in science and promote entomology.

Rose Pest Solutions in Troy, north of Detroit, says the cockroach giveaway includes live insects, plastic habitats and care instructions and is on a first-come, first-served basis.

Each school and organization is limited to two habitats.

The large, oval-shaped cockroaches are native to the island of Madagascar in Africa. They live on the forest floor and can grow up to three inches long. They hiss while fighting each other and during mating rituals.

Rose Pest Solutions has offices in the three states.
