Franklin Township man pleads not guilty by reason of insanity in fatal Turnpike crash

FREMONT-- A northeast Ohio man has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity to vehicular homicide charges.

Authorities say he was traveling at more than 125 mph when his car struck a minivan, killing the couple inside it.

An attorney for Andrew D. Gans of Franklin Township said he entered the pleas for his client on Thursday in Sandusky County court.

Terry Rudes tells The Associated Press that the 24-year-old Gans has a history of mental health issues.

Wilbur and Margaret McCoy, both 77, of Toledo were killed in the Thanksgiving night crash.

State troopers said they were wearing seatbelts when they were hit.

Two troopers separately spotted Gans' car but weren't able to catch or keep up with it before the crash near Fremont, about 40 miles southeast of Toledo.
