AKRON -- An ex-pharmacist has been sentenced to two years in prison and must pay over $300,000 in restitution after illegally filling prescriptions at a northeastern Ohio pharmacy.
Attorney General Mike DeWine says a federal judge in Akron on Thursday sentenced 53-year-old Bruce Franken, who now lives in Pennsylvania.
DeWine says Franken pleaded guilty to a health care fraud count involving filling prescriptions illegally at a Salem pharmacy between May 2009 and July 2011.
Defense attorney David Thomas says Franken is trying to make the best of the situation and move on with his life.
Authorities say Franken was prohibited from filling prescriptions for patients in federally funded health care programs because of previous convictions on criminal charges.
The restitution repays what Medicaid paid for the improperly filled prescriptions.
