$25M aquatic revamp at Toledo Zoo on track

TOLEDO -- A $25.5 million, nearly three-year makeover at the Toledo Zoo Aquarium is expected to be completed in time for the attraction to re-open in the spring of 2015.

The aquarium has been closed since October 2012 for the extensive renovation, which includes more than tripling the water volume of exhibits from 46,000 gallons to 175,000 gallons.

Two new so-called "touch tanks" will allow visitors to interact with creatures such as stingrays.

Zoo spokesman Andi Norman says the building had been starting to require more upkeep and that those working on the makeover will preserve the architectural integrity of the building.
