The Shrine of St. Dymphna, located on the grounds of the Heartland Behavioral Healthcare Facility in Massillon, has been relocated to St. Mary Parish, 206 Cherry Road, N.E., in Massillon.
Originally, the chapel was built to serve Catholic patients and staff of the Massillon State Hospital on ground owned by the state of Ohio, and the buildings were given to the state by the Diocese of Cleveland in the 1930s. That gift was later reaffirmed by the Diocese of Youngstown.
The State Director of Mental Health proposed that the shrine be moved.
The shrine offices will be located on the campus of St. Mary Parish, and the statue of St. Dymphna will reside in a side chapel of the church.
A permanent home for the shrine will be determined at a later date.
