Special services for Christmas

ATWATER

The Atwater Congregational Church, 1237 S.R. 183, will have a Candlelight Service on Christmas Eve. There will be Christmas songs, a short message, and special music by guest soloist Taralyn Pete, who will perform "O Holy Night" and "Joy to the World." The program will begin at 6:30 p.m., and refreshments will be served in the fellowship hall afterward.

Atwater United Methodist Church will hold its Christmas Eve Candlelight Service at 7 p.m. at 6380 Waterloo Road.

CHARLESTOWN

The Christmas Eve Candlelight Service will be held at 7 p.m. at the Charlestown United Methodist Church, 6408 Rock Spring Road.

FREEDOM

The First Congregational Church of Freedom will celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ at its Community Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. The Christmas Eve service will be held one night early, at 6:30 p.m. Dec. 23. The church is located at S.R. 88 and S.R. 303 in Freedom Township.

KENT

Christmas worship times at Trinity Lutheran Church, 600 S. Water St. in Kent, are 7 p.m. for the Family Christmas Eve Service of Holy Communion (with child care provided) and 10 p.m. for the Festival Service of Holy Communion.

Christmas Day worship begins at 10:30 a.m. with the Holy Communion Celebration. Children of all ages may bring their favorite gift for the Blessing of the Toys.

Interim director of music Katie Fowler and church organist David Fisher of the Kent United Church of Christ, 1400 E. Main St. (S.R. 59 at Horning Road), will offer two mostly musical liturgies in candlelight on Monday. The 6:30 p.m. service will include the bell choir, the youth choir, and soprano Guinevere Rhoads performing Handel's "Let the Bright Seraphim."

The 10:30 p.m. service will feature the Chancel Choir and instrumentalists with guest conductor Kerry Glann, formerly of Kent State University, now a doctoral student at the University of North Texas.

The United Methodist Church of Kent, 1435 E. Main St., will have Christmas Eve candlelight services at 7 and 9 p.m. Child care will be provided at the 7 p.m. service. Both services include choirs and special music. Dr. David Palmer's Christmas message "Where is God?" will offer a response to the Newtown tragedy. There will be a 25-minute musical prelude prior to the 9 p.m. service.

Grace Baptist Church, 5915 Rhodes Road in Kent, will hold Christmas Eve services at 6 and 8 p.m. Monday. The first will be a family-oriented service led by the Youth Group, and the message will be delivered through a puppet show. Child care will be available for children through age 3.

The second service will be more traditional, with the message being presented by Pastor Bruce Chouinard and special music provided by the Grace Worship Choir.

Both services will offer congregational singing and a candlelight ceremony.

Christ Episcopal Church in Kent, 118 S. Mantua St., will offer five Christmas services of Holy Communion this year. On Sunday, services will be at 8 and 10 a.m. Christmas Eve services will be at 5 and 10:30 p.m. Monday and will feature special music and carols. The 5 p.m. service will also include the Children's Pageant. Visiting children are welcome to be in the pageant and should arrive 15 minutes before the service starts to choose an angel or shepherd costume.

On Christmas Day, there will be a meditative service without music at 10 a.m. featuring guest preacher the Rev. Kip Colegrove. For more information, call the Rev. Julie Fisher at 330-256-8994.

MANTUA

At St. Joseph Church in Mantua, the Christmas Eve service begins at 5 p.m. (this includes the Children's Choir) and at 10 p.m. The Christmas Day services will begin at 10 a.m.

Christ Lutheran Church, 10827 N. Main St., Mantua, will hold a Christmas Eve Candlelight Communion service at 7:30 p.m. Monday.

Portage Faith United Methodist Church, 9922 S.R. 44, will have its Candlelight Christmas Eve services at 4 and 9 p.m. Monday.

MARLBORO

The Chapel in Marlboro's annual Christmas Eve Meditation Service will be held at 7 p.m. Many of the features involved in the service are the reading of Scripture, the singing of carols, the lighting of candles and the observance of Communion. The Chapel outdoor chimes will greet worshippers with the playing of Christmas hymns and carols. Adults Pastor Rob Cochran will bring remarks from Scripture.

The Chapel in Marlboro is located at 8700 S.R. 619 in Marlboro Township, between Hartville and Alliance.

RANDOLPH

The Randolph United Methodist Church, 4078 Waterloo Road, will hold its traditional Christmas Eve Service at 7 p.m. The service includes the message of the scriptures, singing carols, and lighting candles.

RAVENNA

The Christmas Eve service will begin at 6 p.m. at the First Church of God, 237 New Milford Road, Ravenna.

The First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) of Ravenna, 420 S. Prospect St., will offer a family candlelight worship service at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the sanctuary. A pre-worship music (both vocal and instrumental) will begin at 7 p.m. The season of Advent ends with the lighting of the Christ Candle. Holy Communion will be observed, and a Christmas offering will be received. The worship will close with the traditional lighting of individual candles. A nursery for infants will be available.

The Chancel Choir of St. Paul Lutheran Church, 170 N. Freedom St., Ravenna, will present "A Celebration of Carols," a Christmas cantata, at the 7 p.m. worship service on Monday. This will include a candlelight service with the singing of "Silent Night." A traditional candlelight service with Holy Communion will be offered at 10 p.m.

First Congregational Church of Ravenna, 266 S. Chestnut St., will hold its Christmas Eve Service at 11 p.m. on Monday.

The regular Sunday service remains the same, at 10:15 a.m.

"For Unto You a Child Is Born," a pageant telling the birth of Christ through Scripture and music, will be presented by the children and youth of the First United Methodist Church of Ravenna at the 11 a.m. worship service on Sunday. The church is located at 263 S. Prospect St., Ravenna.

ROOTSTOWN

The First Congregational Church of Rootstown, United Church of Christ, 4022 S.R. 44, will light the final Advent candle during the 9:45 a.m. service on Sunday. The musical "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year" will be presented by the Psalm Singers with congregational carol singing that day. The event is open to the public.

The Christmas Eve candlelight service at the First Congregational Church of Rootstown will be at 7 p.m. Monday. The service will have carol singing, music by a women's quartet, the reading of the Christmas story, and candlelighting. Following the service, there will be a time of fellowship around the Wassail bowl in the fellowship room.

STREETSBORO

St. Thomas Lutheran Church, 9042 S.R. 43 in Streetsboro, will celebrate Christmas Eve with a Children's Service at 7:30 p.m. Monday. The children will lead the service, "It Wouldn't Be Christmas Without ... ." At 10:30 p.m., the Candlelight Communion Service with special music will be held.

SUFFIELD

A Longest Night Service for Hope and Healing will take place at 7 tonight at the Suffield United Church of Christ, 1115 S.R. 43.

TALLMADGE

Nine Lessons & Carols will be presented at 8 and 10:30 a.m. Sunday at Tallmadge Lutheran Church, 759 East Ave. The choir and orchestra will be directed by Janice Kobb. Christmas will be celebrated with services Christmas Eve at 5, 7:30 and 10 p.m. Special music and favorite hymns of the season will be in all of the services. A special children's message will be included in the 5 and 7:30 p.m. services. Candle lighting will take place in the 7:30 and 10 p.m. services. Holy Communion will be shared in the 10 p.m. service.

Christmas Day will be observed with a festival service at 10:30 a.m.

WAYLAND

Candlelight services will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Wayland Community Church, 6355 Wayland Road.

WINDHAM

Christmas Eve services begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Windham United Methodist Church, 9051 N. Main St.
