The congregation of Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church, 5504 S. Prospect St. in Ravenna, had an all-day celebration in February to mark the church's 85th anniversary.

The Rev. Andrew Wright, church pastor, spoke at the morning service. The theme for the day was "Preparing to Build God's House" as found in I Chronicles 22:5-10.

Sis. R. May was the mistress of ceremonies. The church hosted the congregation of New Mount Calvary Baptist Church in Ravenna at the afternoon service, during which the Rev. B.J. Grant of New Mount Calvary spoke.

The choir offered several selections, and Sis. Deseree Liddell shared a reading.

Between services, dinner was served for all those assembled.

Pilgrim Rest's associate pastors are the Rev. Terri Hurd and the Rev. John Hurd.

The chair of the event was Mother Artherene Wilmington. Sis. Fannie Seeden was the co-chair. Sis. B. Berry is the church clerk.

Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church began in 1928 under the leadership of the late Rev. McMann. In 1978, the members moved into a new, larger church on South Prospect Street, their current home.

In 1998, the Rev. Isaiah Moss and the congregation were able to burn the mortgage.

Under the leadership of the Rev. Andrew Wright, the congregation has been able to install a new handicap ramp, a new bathroom on the first floor, and a new water cooler.

Besides Rev. Wright, other ministers who have served the Pilgrim Rest Baptist Church are the Rev. McMann, the Rev. Burt, the Rev. Williams, the Rev. People, the Rev. Govan, the Rev. James Douglas, the Rev. James A. Randolph, the Rev. Beverly Sadler, and the Rev. Isaiah Moss, who served 41 years and retired in 2009.
