The Rev. Msgr. Peter M. Polando, J.C.L., has been appointed Rector of St. Columba Cathedral in Youngstown by Bishop George V. Murry, S.J., effective March 22. Polando was ordained June 21, 1980, after completing seminary studies at Mount St. Mary Seminary in Cincinnati.

Following ordination, he was appointed associate pastor at St. Mary Parish in Massillon. He served as a faculty member and associate principal at Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown.

Polando was appointed pastor of St. Mary Parish in Newton Falls while also serving at Cardinal Mooney. Following that assignment, he served as pastor at St. Joseph Parish in Newton Falls. Polando was named pastor at St. Matthias Parish in Youngstown, then pastor of Sts. Cyril & Methodius Parish and administrator of Holy Name Parish, in addition to St. Matthias. These three churches have merged as Our Lady of Sorrows Parish as part of the diocesan parish reconfiguration plan.

Polando earned a degree in Canon Law (J.C.L.) from Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C., and became adjutant judicial vicar and bishop's delegate in Canonical Administrative Matters in the Diocesan Tribunal.

Polando served on the Board of Mediation and Arbitration for the Diocesan Office of Conciliation. He is a member of the Diocesan Finance Council and National Chaplain of the First Catholic Slovak Ladies Association. He will also continue his canonical work. Polando was named chaplain of His Holiness by Pope John Paul II in 1997.
