The First Congregational Church of Ravenna's 17th annual Volleyball Game and Picnic will take place Sept. 14 at Memorial Shelter of John Tontimonia City Park in Ravenna.
Events will begin at 2:30 p.m., according to Jonathan Floyd, activities coordinator and leader of the Kids Youth Ministry at the church. The event is free and open to the public. Floyd asks the people attending to bring a dish to share, and to bring friends.
Floyd has been the activities coordinator at the church for 17 years. "I still love it," he said. He explained that he organizes activities both teenagers and little children will like.
The church's recreation room, which was dedicated to the late Dr. Edward Webb, is filled with equipment for fun activities, such as a ping-pong table, air hockey table, pool table, balls, nets and hula hoops. Floyd said 135 people have taken advantage of the rec room this year, including little kids, Scouts and teens.
He worries about today's youth, saying, "This society has changed. Now kids have no respect for anyone, too many cell phones, too many violent games on video."
He hopes to get them to come to church, where "we can make a difference in their lives." He tells them, "God wants you to come. This is his church and we are not going anywhere anytime soon."
Floyd is very active on Facebook, where he sends out positive and uplifting messages, such as "God isn't done with you yet and the best is yet to come."
He suggests that teens -- and their parents -- need to look at their priorities. "Church and God need to come first and then the other stuff comes next," he said.
Floyd began the Kids Youth Ministry in November 2012 in the church gym, and it is now an ongoing ministry.
He invites children to come, and to bring their parents. "There is a good Christian atmosphere," he said.
Floyd hopes that all members of the community will come to the annual picnic on Sept. 14. He plans to post photos from the event on his Facebook page.
The church is located at 266 S. Chestnut St. The Rev. Jerry Kruse is the interim pastor. For more information, call 330-297-1461.
