Televised Talent: Let's Stay Together — or not

By Diane Smith | Staff Writer Published:

Sam was all out of saves on American Idol, and this time, the boy wonder may have done it to himself.

With the Top 5 awaiting the inevitable elimination, Ryan Secrest had an interesting proposal.

They could opt to all stay together for the following week. But that came at a price. Two would go home the following week. Oh, and the secret ballot had to be unanimous.

The vote came in. Three opted to stay together. But two voted to send someone home.

And with that, Sam, the recipient of the Judges’ Save earlier in the season, sang his way off the show.

Of course, we really don’t know who voted for the instant elimination and against the double elimination, but it’s not hard to put two and two together.

Which contestants had landed in the bottom before, and which ones never had?

My money is on Sam and Jessica.

Sam had been in the bottom two or three more than once, and Jessica has lived in the bottom two for weeks.

They knew that in the event of a double elimination, they were vulnerable.

Sam is a likeable kid, but he still has the deer in the headlights thing going on. He’s easily distracted, especially by pretty girls. And both performances Wednesday were weak.

If he had come on the show with a little maturity under his belt, he’d stand a better chance of a good post-show career. But oh yeah, this is not The Voice.

Another pointless save on American Idol.

Buh-bye, Sam.
