Charities call for turkeys

With Thanksgiving days away, the Center of Hope and Kent Social Services are looking for donations to fill nearly a thousand food baskets for families.

Donations of turkeys have been slow coming in, said Ann Marie Mann, director of emergency outreach services for Family & Community Services, Inc. And the cost of food and turkeys is up considerably.

"What we really need are donations of cash and checks" made out to the Center of Hope and Kent Social Services, she said. "That way we can purchase what's needed."

"We actually have about 125 more (families) this year than we had last year, and the phone's ringing off the hook," Mann said.

The Center of Hope in Ravenna registered 525 families for food boxes while Kent Social Services signed up 450, Mann said.

Needed items include: Soup, canned vegetables, stuffing mix, pumpkin, apple sauce, pasta, noodles, fresh vegetables, cranberry sauce, gravy mix and a cake or muffin mix.

Donations may be dropped off weekdays between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. at the Center of Hope, 1054 W. Main. St. Ravenna, or Kent Social Services, 1066 S. Water St., Kent.

The Center of Hope number is 330-297-5454 and Kent Social Services is 330-673-6963.
