Brimfield Police Department arrests man for allegedly raping 12-year-old girl

Record-Courier Staff Report Published:

A Brimfield man was arrested Thursday evening and charged with rape for allegedly forcing a 12-year-old girl to have sex with him.

Dustin Hayes, 20, was arrested at 5 p.m. Thursday at a house in Akron by Brimfield police officers, according to Police Chief David Oliver. He is charged with eight counts of rape, all first-degree felonies.

Oliver said officers received information late Wednesday that Hayes was engaging in sexual activity with a 12-year-old girl. Sgt. David Knarr and officers Kelly Sonagere and Russell Diehl investigated the information, interviewed Hayes and subsequently obtained a warrant for his arrest. Oliver said all three officers did an "outstanding job" on the case.

Hayes is being held in the Portage County jail pending arraignment in Portage County Municipal Court. Additional charges may be filed after the case is reviewed by the Portage County Prosecutor's Office and a grand jury.

Each first-degree felony charge carries a potential prison sentence of three to 11 years upon conviction.

  • If it's proven true, it's off to the big house. There is no excuse for this unless the man is mentally deficient in some way. That still wont change his sentence though.
