Hiram College concert to benefit Hurricane Sandy victims

Student voices will sing in support of Hurricane Sandy victims at the spring choral concert "Bridge Over Troubled Water" at 7:30 tonight at the Hiram Christian Church.

Members of the Hiram College Chamber Singers and Hiram College Western Reserve Women's Chorus will perform songs from a wide range of styles, centered on the theme of help and asking for help.

About 35 students will sing in the concert.

Assistant Professor of Music Dawn Sonntag decided to present this spring's concert as a benefit concert for Sandy victims after hearing about the hardships East Coast families were facing following the October 2012 storm.

"Music has a way of healing," Sonntag said. "It can be very cathartic to sing and to listen to music that has text that talks about loss or asking for help, and it can be very encouraging and uplifting to listen to music where help is being offered."

Admission to the concert is free, but donations will be accepted and distributed by the Disciples of Christ relief organization, Week of Compassion.
