A Streetsboro man has been charged with carrying a loaded gun into a city bar, making threats against a female family member and threatening to commit suicide.
Patrick F. Kelly, 53, of 9121 Ranch Road, is charged with one count each of possessing a firearm in a liquor establishment, a third-degree felony, inducing panic, a first-degree misdemeanor and domestic violence, a fourth-degree misdemeanor.
Kelly was arraigned Wednesday in Portage County Municipal Court in Ravenna, and was jailed on 10 percent of $50,000 bond. Conditions of his release are no consumption or possession of alcohol or drugs, and no contact with the female victim in the case. A temporary protection order was issued in Portage County Municipal Court on behalf of the victim, according to court records.
Streetsboro police spokesman Lt. Darin Powers said Kelly had "a domestic issue" at home, and went to the Streets Bar & Grill at 9107 S.R. 14, where he began drinking. The female half later showed up at the bar, at which point Kelly pulled a .380-caliber semiautomatic handgun, threatened to shoot the woman and then put the gun to his own head, Powers said.
Police were called and officers arrived to find Kelly holding the gun. Powers said. Fortunately, he said, responding officer Sgt. Andrew Suvada is trained in crisis intervention and talked with Kelly, convinced him to put the gun down.
Even after dropping the gun, Kelly refused to comply with officers' orders and was shot with a Taser to force him to submit, Powers said. Kelly was arrested and taken to Robinson Memorial Hospital in Ravenna for treatment of a minor head injury suffered when he was hit with the Taser and fell.
"The situation could have been a lot worse," Powers said.
