CLEVELAND (AP) -- Police in Cleveland say an officer shot a burglary suspect who they say pointed a gun at him during an attempted arrest.

The man -- 29-year-old Xavier Hampstead -- survived the 5 p.m. Tuesday shooting on the city's west side. He's in stable condition at a hospital.

The Northeast Ohio Media Group (http://bit.ly/19BpyWn ) reports that it started when officers were told Hampstead was in a car containing some stolen items, including guns.

The officers said they approached the vehicle with Hampstead sitting inside. One of the officers said he saw the man lean back and point a gun at him. The officer fired two shots, striking Hampstead in the neck and shoulder area.

Police say Hampstead drove off and was apprehended later.
