TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) -- The University of Toledo and the Toledo Zoo are among the places announcing closures as northwest Ohio braced Sunday for a winter storm.
With a Level 3 snow emergency declared in Lucas County, the university canceled Monday classes but said the institution would otherwise remain open. Nonessential employees are being asked to stay home. The medical center and its outpatient clinics will remain open.
Classes also are canceled for Toledo Public Schools and dozens of other schools around the region.
Lucas County's winter storm emergency was declared for all roads beginning at 5:30 p.m. Sunday. That means that only emergency personnel are allowed on the roadways.
The Toledo Zoo is closed through Monday and the Hollywood Casino Toledo said it would close at 4:30 p.m. Sunday and remain closed until the snow emergency is lifted.
In addition, all Metroparks in Lucas County were set to be closed Monday because of the snow emergency.
Around Ohio, other closings had begun to be announced Sunday in anticipation of the coming deep freeze.
In Cincinnati, temperatures in the 40s on Sunday were expected to plunge to near zero overnight, prompting officials to warn drivers of the dangers of ice forming on roads.
Students in Akron, Lorain, Parma, Elyria and other northeast Ohio districts were told classes were canceled Monday, while in Cleveland the city said it would make available its recreation centers from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday and Tuesday as warming centers providing shelter and showers.
The Horseshoe Casino Cleveland said it would close at 3 a.m. Monday until further notice while the ThistleDown Racino announced it would remain open with a reduced staff.
In Columbus, city and Catholic schools also will be closed on Monday.
Access to the garage under the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus was being limited through Wednesday in a move described as protecting the historic structure from potential damage from the winds and arctic temperatures that are forecast, some of the coldest in 20 years. An east-side entrance to the garage was to remain open.
