Lucas County top election official resigns

TOLEDO -- A top election official in a northwest Ohio county is resigning as the state's elections chief tries to oust several more people from that county board.

Daniel DeAngelis said in a Wednesday letter that he's resigning June 2 as deputy director of the Lucas County board of elections in Toledo. He didn't explain why.

The secretary of state says the board has been plagued by dysfunction, and this week he began trying to remove five people from their positions, including DeAngelis.

The board's director and three board members will get a chance to argue for keeping their jobs during a hearing Thursday.

The board has experienced several years of infighting and accusations of wrongdoing. Missteps and squabbling earlier this month delayed voting results for hours in the primary election.
