SANTA ANA, Calif. -- Police say that a man they have arrested on suspicion of kidnapping a girl 10 years ago got false identification papers for her from Mexico so he could marry her.
The girl was 15 when she disappeared from Santa Ana in 2004.
Santa Ana Police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said Wednesday that Isidro Garcia got the documents in 2007 as part of his elaborate efforts to hide her age and name.
In 2012, he fathered a child with her.
Bertagna says she tried to escape twice but was severely beaten.
Police say Garcia told the girl, who is in the United States illegally, that her family had stopped trying to find her and they would be deported if she contacted them.
The now-25-year-old woman first contacted authorities Monday.
