Woman accused of abandoning kids

CLEVELAND -- A woman accused of abandoning her 1-year-old son and 3-week-old daughter at a Salvation Army shelter in Cleveland has been charged with two counts of child endangering.

Police say 31-year-old Alisha Houston checked into the shelter around 2 a.m. May 28.

Workers found the two children in the room about seven hours later, but Houston wasn't there. She was arrested two days later in suburban Columbus.

It's unclear if Houston has an attorney.

Doctors examined the children and found one was injured. They were placed with the Cuyahoga (ky-uh-HOH'-guh) County Department of Children and Family Services.

Ohio's Safe Haven Law allows someone to voluntarily leave a child with a police officer, a hospital or with an emergency medical provider. The law applies only to children up to 30 days old.
