Ohio bus driver who said book blocked bullet fired

DAYTON -- A white bus driver who told authorities that a religious book in his shirt pocket blocked bullets as he was attacked by three black men has been fired from his job.

Dayton police have said 49-year-old driver Rickey Wagoner's account of being attacked outside his bus in February wasn't supported by evidence and testing. The FBI also says its investigation of the case as a potential hate crime found no evidence.

The executive director of the Greater Dayton Regional Transit Authority says Wagoner was fired Friday. RTA Executive Director Mark Donaghy says the agency's investigation concluded Wagoner fabricated the story and violated RTA standards.

Wagoner's attorney, Jeremiah Denslow, says Wagoner plans to appeal his firing.

No criminal charges have been filed.
