U.S. authorizes airstrikes, humanitarian aid in Iraq

Associated Press Published:

WASHINGTON — President Barack Obama has authorized targeted airstrikes in Iraq against Islamic militants, along with airdrops of food and water to Iraqis.

The U.S. military will carry out airstrikes if militants advance toward the city of Erbil.

The announcements marked the deepest American engagement in Iraq since U.S. troops withdrew in late 2011 after nearly a decade of war.
