KENT Local couple shares duties for shrine

Tadmor Shrine covers several counties and its purpose is to support the 22 Shrine Hospitals in North America, including hospitals in Erie, Pa., and Cincinnati.

Illustrious Sir Donald C. Scherer is currently the Potentate of Tadmor Shrine, only the second time in the history of Tadmor that the Potentate has been from Portage County, Kent in particular. The previous was Illustrious Sir Mel Yankovich who served in 1982.

Lady Carolyn Scherer is the High Priestess of Kadesh Court No. 19, Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America and is the first High Priestess from this area. The Scherers have the distinction of being the first married couple to hold both of the positions at the same time.

Don also has headed all of the Masonic organizations in Kent and served on the boards for the City of Kent, United Christian Ministries and the Services for the Aging. He is a retired teacher who substitutes during the winter months and works at Oak Knolls Golf Course in Kent during the summer.

He and Carolyn have served as Worthy Patron and Worthy Matron, respectively, three times in the Order of the Eastern Star. Carolyn, a retired accountant, is currently serving as president of Coterie I, belongs to the Chestnut Society, Friends of Fashion, Womens Club of Kent, and the Red Hat Society. They are active members of the Kent United Methodist Church.
