PORTAGE COUNTY Elks Lodge awards $8,000 to new scholarship winners

The Elks National Foundation awards $2.2 million in college scholarships to 500 high school seniors in the Most Valuable Student contest.

Ravenna Elks Lodge No. 1076 has announced two scholarship winners, Therese Francis and Michael Kane, both of Waterloo High School. Each will receive $1,000 a year for four years.

Therese is the daughter of Stephen and Angela Francis of Randolph. She ranks first in her class. Her activities include Student Council, National Honor Society, Beta Club, band, cross country and her future plans are to attend Walsh College in Canton and major in elementary education.

Michael Kane is the son of Tracy and Carolyn Kane of Randolph. He is president of Student Council, is a member of the National Honor Society, track, band, and cross country and plans on majoring in music and humanities in college. He recently was chosen Portage County Teen of the Month.

Ravenna Elks Lodge has been successful for area students receiving $1,000 a year for four years. The past scholarship winners include 1998 Nathaniel Ellsworth, Waterloo High School; 1999 Alicia Jarvis, Waterloo High School; 2000 Deanna Cettomai, Ravenna High School; 2001 Ashley Snider, Ravenna High School; and 2002 Therese Francis and Michael Kane of Waterloo High School.
