MOGADORE Group makes afghans, donates to area needy

Laura Nethken Published:

Warm Up Akron! is a group started in April 2000. It is based on the Warm Up America! program, and members make afghans for the needy in the Akron area. The group meets from 6:30 to 8 p.m. every other Tuesday night at the Mogadore Library. So far, members have donated 629 afghans, numerous pairs of slippers, some mittens and other miscellaneous items.

Most of the donations have gone to the ACCESS, Inc. homeless shelter in downtown Akron. ACCESS houses up to 36 homeless women and children per night. Other donated afghans have gone to Akron Pregnancy Services, Childrens Services and Christ Child. The group plans to donate to two new agencies this week: PAL Mission in Canton and Suburban Pregnancy Services in Akron.

The next meeting will be held Tuesday at the Mogadore Library, 144 S. Cleveland Ave., Mogadore, and is open to the public. Volunteers should bring crochet hooks or knitting needles (or they can be provided). Yarn is available at the meetings.
