The Portage County Gardeners, in conjunction with the Portage Soil and Conservation District, are sponsoring a poster contest through the Portage County schools. Last years poster winner for first place at county and regional levels, and second place at the state level, is sixth-grader Bobby Paolane of James A. Garfield Middle School. Different garden club representatives are contacting fifth-grade teachers at assigned schools, acquainting them with the program and supplying poster board for the contestants. The theme for 2003 is Food for the Future. The first judging of the posters will be held April 29 through May 1 at the schools, followed by the county-wide judging for each school winner May 2 at the conservation office. Winning posters will be displayed at the Portage County-Randolph Fair and then judged at the state level. The Soil and Water Conservation District will deliver a certificate and seedlings to each participant.
