Childrens Ballet Theatre, under the artistic direction of Christine Meneer, will continue its 10th anniversary season by premiering the classical ballet Coppelia April 26 and 27 at the Akron Civic Theatre.
The comedy features the eccentric doll maker Dr. Coppelius, a feisty village girl named Swanilda, her fianc, Franz, and a very lifelike doll, Coppelia.
Swanilda and her four friends sneak into the doll makers workshop and create havoc with their mischief. As in every classic fairy tale, true love prevails, but not without a few twists and turns along the way.
Former Joffrey Ballet star and international performer Jerry Burr will portray the mysterious Dr. Coppelius. Ohio Ballets Eric Carvill will dance the role of Franz and CBTs own Jessica Schroeder, a Stow-Munroe Falls High School senior, will star as the jealous Swanilda.
She will be joined by her four mischievous friends, CBT dancers Sarah Poinski of Tallmadge, Erin Kelly of Stow, Jamie Gentile of Munroe Falls and Rachel Galambos of Cuyahoga Falls.
Brian Murphy, also of Ohio Ballet, and an accomplished troupe of 30 CBT dancers will complete the ballets cast.
There will be three performances of Coppelia, beginning at 2 and 7 p.m. April 26 and continuing at 7 p.m. April 27. Tickets are available at the Akron Civic Theatre box office (330) 253-2488 and through Ticketmaster (330) 945-9400 or www.ticketmaster.com. Ticket prices are $20, $17 and $15 (includes a $1 Akron Civic Theatre restoration fee).
