Roy Sayre of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 5067 of Garrettsville throws a flag into a fire as part of a flag burning demonstration with Cub Scout Pack No. 62 of Garrettsville. About 100 people, including 30 Scouts and their families, attended the event that taught the Scouts the proper way to dispose of faded and/or torn American flags. VFW members inspected each flag to deem them unusable before they were dipped in kerosene and thrown onto a grate designed to keep the flags from touching the ground. The Scouts had collected about 50 flags from family and community members and asked the VFW to assist them with the ceremony, which the troop now hopes to make an annual event.
