In keeping with its promotion of Arbor Day, the Garden Club of Kent will feature local environmentalist Richard Abbott as guest speaker for its general meeting at 6:30 p.m. April 28 at the United Methodist Church in Kent. Abbott is chairman of the board and the founder of ACRT, Inc. Environmental Specialists. He has more than 50 years of experience in many environmental fields and in 1978 established the first commercial urban forestry consulting organization in North America. He was a member of the American National Standards Institute Tree Trimming Safety Standards Committee for 32 years and was chairman for tree trimming safety standards for 15 of those years. He is a past president of the International Society of Arboriculture. Abbott is the only utility arborist to become president of the ISA in its 78-year history. He has made technical presentations at meetings and published articles in professional and trade journals on a variety of topics. Congress and others have called him as an expert witness speaking for the industry. He also has testified in federal, state and local courts on numerous matters. Abbott has been extensively involved in pesticide legislation and regulation at the federal and state level.
