Around Ravenna

By Angie Reedy Published:

In early October, David McKay and John Kinney traveled to Las Vegas to meet up with David's brother, Dan McKay of Los Angeles, and his sister, Patti Allan and her husband Roland of Salt Lake.

It was their first time together in several years. John and Dan have been friends since high school. A highlight of the trip was walking across the new bridge from Nevada to Arizona that overlooks the Hoover Dam. They also enjoyed Old Las Vegas and the Strip. It was a good time just being together for five days.

David's wife Karen was unable to make the trip but enjoyed the company of her sister, Charlotte Riggenbach of Rootstown, while Dave was gone.

Sixty classmates and spouses met at Windmill Lakes Oct. 20 to celebrate their 45-year class reunion from Ravenna High School. The class of '67 enjoyed a casual evening visiting with each other and recalling the "good old days."

Out-of-towners included Diana (Edwards) Mosolf, Orma Moore of Florida, Andy Turocy of Maine, Dane Verrona, Penny (Fitt) Fisher of Indiana, and Marcia (Savako) Davis of Missouri.

The Byers' Castle on South Prospect Street in Ravenna was recently restored by the DiPaola family, who have owned the historic home since 1951. I recently spoke with Peggy DiPaola, who informed me that the family makes the first floor available to others for small, intimate affairs. "We have had people hold rehearsal dinners, fundraisers, bridal showers and baby showers at our home. We have also had professional photographers use the estate for senior class pictures and weddings. Ravenna has many homes that are historic treasures. We enjoy sharing one of those treasures with those who appreciate the architecture and craftsmanship of older homes." If you are interested in having an event at Byers' Castle, contact Peggy at 330-297-7387.

Peggy DiPaola and Jack Schafer recently spoke about the Ravenna flagpole at Beta Sorosis. They formed Friends of the Flagpole to raise money to restore the historic structure. You can contribute by sending your contribution to Friends of the Flagpole, P.O. Box 444, Ravenna, OH 44266. Their presentation is very interesting and contains many historic pictures of Ravenna during the past 100 years. If your group would like Jack and Peggy to speak about the flagpole, call Jack Schafer at 330-296-9677.

Mary Elizabeth Polumbo recently suffered a fall and is recuperating at Consulate Health Care of Brandon, Room 414, 701 Victoria St., Brandon, FL 33510. She is doing better and would like cards sent to her. She hopes to return to her home very soon.

If you are at Robinson Memorial Hospital, stop in at the gift shop. You will be amazed at the beautiful items for sale there. Who knows? You might find something for that hard-to-buy-for person on your Christmas list.

Ravenna Community Choir will present its Christmas concert, "Follow That Star," at 3 p.m. on Dec. 16. This year's concert will be held at the First United Methodist Church on Prospect Street. As always, you will be treated to beautiful music. Plan to attend.
