Literacy Coalition sponsors tutor workshop

Published:

The Portage County Literacy Coalition recently sponsored a 14-Hour Laubach Literacy Workshop at Maplewood Career Center in Ravenna to train volunteer reading tutors.

The workshop was presented by Doris Schoning, Adult Basic and Literacy Education coordinator/PCLC director, with the help of an ABLE staff member and PCLC president, Laure Gauntner.

The workshop covered many aspects of teaching literacy techniques to adults and children. Attendees of the workshop learned about phonics, tutoring techniques, learning styles, and more.

After the workshop was complete, the PCLC had five new certified Laubach reading tutors to help adults, teens, and children in Portage County. (Dr. Frank C. Laubach (1884-1970), a literacy pioneer and missionary, created Laubach Literacy International.

There is no fee for this training and when the 14-hour training is complete, the person becomes a certified Laubach reading tutor.

Project: LEARN, the volunteer tutor training program of the Adult Basic and Literacy Education Program at Maplewood Career Center, is in need of volunteer tutors on a regular basis.

The next 14-hour tutor workshop will be held in the spring. For more information, call 330-235-0020.
