Around Nelson by Denise Bly

Old man winter came back with a vengeance this week after having two weekends with balmy 50- to 60-degree temperatures. The blustery, winter weather returned just in time to remind us that it is January in Northeastern Ohio, not April, as the previous two weekends led us to believe. This past week we woke up to near zero temperatures, with wind chills in the double digits below zero, that have caused many to retreat to the indoors until the weather warms up a bit.

The Nelson-Garrettsville Community Cupboard (NGCC) serves families in need in the James A. Garfield School District. It is open from 4 to 7 p.m. Mondays and 9 a.m. to noon Wednesdays. The food cupboard is located in the rear of the Isaac Mills building on the circle in Nelson.

The food cupboard is looking for a new home. It has outgrown its current facility and needs a bigger place. Anyone who might be able to help can email ngcc305@gmail.com. The food cupboard is closed on any day that classes at James A. Garfield Schools are canceled.

Attention gardeners: Nelson-Garrettsville Community Cupboard will be looking for produce to help feed those in need, so why not consider planting an extra row or two in your garden this spring to help out your neighbors?

Last week when it was so nice, I stopped to look at the monument in the center of the square (although it is a circle, it is technically called a square) in Nelson and found this interesting information about it on the Nelson website. The Civil War Monument is located on Nelson Square across from the community house. The monument is inscribed with "erected by the citizens of Nelson to the memory of her soldiers who fell in defense of our country -- the War of the Rebellion, Nov. 18, 1865." This monument is a nearly 150-year-old sandstone memorial to the Nelson Civil War dead and stands starkly outlined against the sky. It is constructed in four tiers and boasts an American eagle resting from flight on the top tier.
