The Portage County Teen Board has named Lauren Van Meter and Jacob "Jake" Sweet as the Teens of the Month for January.
Lauren is the daughter of David and Barbara Van Meter of Ravenna. She attends Ravenna High School, where she has been active in choir, track, freshman mentoring and leadership and was captain of the volleyball team and president of the National Honor Society.
She has earned letters in volleyball and track, earned a superior rating at solo and ensemble, and appeared on the honor roll multiple times.
She enjoys singing in her free time and also likes watching movies, discovering new music and reading novels. Lauren plans to major in engineering at a nearby college.
Jake is the son of Alvin and Rose Sweet of Garrettsville. At Windham High School, he has been president and vice president of Student Council, president and treasurer of the National Honor Society and captain of the football team. He was active in Ski Club, basketball, baseball and Envirothon. He earned honors in football, baseball and academics, appeared on the honor roll multiple times, and was a Portage Trail Conference scholar athlete.
He enjoys hanging out with his girlfriend, snowboarding, making things out of wood, reading, lifting weights, hunting, and spending time with his family.
Jake plans to attend college in Akron or Youngstown through the Bachelor of Science/Doctor of Medicine Degree program with the Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown. After he earns a doctorate degree, he plans to become a surgeon.
