Writing stories about disasters, choices in life that may have been disasters, dogs in trouble, and treats that are well-deserved, the Power of the Pen traveling teams once again put Crestwood Middle School on the map.
The student writers recently competed against 10 schools at James A. Garfield Middle School in the Power of the Pen District Tournament.
Individual winners include Lillian Bissell, who earned a trophy for fourth place overall, and Leah Van Horn for her seventh-place medal.
The eighth-grade team, consisting of Karli Bigler, Allyson Buchert, Evie Head, Marissa Perry, Madeline Turner, and Emily Walker, with alternates Jake Tekavec and Max Nuhfer, placed third as a team.
The seventh-grade team placed fourth as a team. Team members are Lillian Bissell, Hannah Boyer, Zoe Catcott, Katie Fosnight, Leah Van Horn, Caitlin Zeigler, and alternates Lauren Pallotto and Ashley Marotta.
Madeline Turner and Evie Head placed seventh and sixth, respectively, with Evie also earning the prestigious "Best of Round" for one of her first-place ranked stories. That means her story was voted the "Best" of all the first-place ranked stories in that round.
The Kent State University Regional Tournament is set for Feb. 23. Katie Fosnight, Caitlin Zeigler, Leah Van Horn, Lillian Bissell, Karli Bigler, Evie Head, Allyson Buchert, Emily Walker and Madeline Turner will advance to the next level.
