About 120 students from 11 local schools spanning Portage, Summit, Cuyahoga and Medina counties recently took part in the Power of the Pen competition.
Accompanied by coaches, parents and friends, they showed off their communication skills and imaginations.
St. Patrick School in Kent took highest honors for the seventh grade.
Qualifiers who will be participating in the Regional Competition on Feb. 23 at Kent State University for seventh grade are Alyssa Cottrill, Colin Burns, Kailey Maroni, Hannah Finley and Emma Kennedy.
Kailey Maroni received a trophy for third place overall. Hannah Finley received a medallion for ninth place.
Eighth-grade student qualifiers are Brynn Colando, Emme Lenzo and Morgan Thorn.
