Members of the Portage County Gardeners honored the presidents of the various local garden clubs at a recent tea, held at the Gardeners' Center in Rootstown.
President Helena Parry introduced the executive officers for 2013: Helena Parry, president; Becky Head and Mary Jo Ryan, first vice presidents; Brenda Smith and Dolores Winkler, second vice presidents; Becky Kuchenbecker, third vice president; Donna Hajek, secretary; Diane Jendrisak, assistant secretary; Ruth Ann Krutz, treasurer; and Jane Minard, assistant treasurer.
She also introduced the club presidents: Helena Parry, president of Portage County Gardeners and Herb Society; Linda May, president of Annevar Garden Club; Sue Conlin, president of Oak Branch Garden Club; Mary Jo Ryan, president of Ravenna Garden Club; and Jeanna Pisegna, president of Elm Garden Club.
The Presidents' Tea was hosted by the executive officers. A candle burned on the table in memory of those members who recently died.
The tables were decorated in pink with candies and paper flowers. Workshops, programs and fundraisers planned for the year were reviewed.
Special guest Lynn Vogel of the Portage County Soil and Water Conservation District discussed the Conservation Poster Contest for this year. The Portage County Gardeners have been involved with this project for 25 years.
Fifth-graders from 10 area schools will design posters around this year's theme, "Where Does Your Water Shed?" The gardeners serve as judges and hand out ribbons and tree saplings to every child who participates.
A Craft and Collectibles Sale, open to outside vendors, will be held at the Gardeners' Center from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. March 16. Tables at $20 each are still available. Anyone interested can call Pat Thomas at 330-297-0232 to reserve a table.
The gardeners are also offering advertising space in their County Gardener publication. To place a black and white ad in the next four issues for a $20 fee, call Helena Parry at 330-673-0577 before April 1.
