President Lincoln's bodyguard to be topic

Published:

The Deerfield Historical Society will sponsor a first-person interpretation by Bob O'Connor, as Ward Hill Lamon, bodyguard to President Abraham Lincoln, entitled "I Told Him Not To Go."

This event will take place at the Deerfield Town Hall, 1450 S.R. 14 on April 14, the anniversary of Lincoln's assassination.

O'Connor is the author of six Civil War books including a historical fiction account "The Virginian Who Might Have Saved Lincoln" -- the only book ever published about Abraham Lincoln's bodyguard.

He also edited the only book Ward Hill Lamon ever wrote, "The Life of Abraham Lincoln as President."

This was written in 1880 but never published until 2010 when O'Connor found the manuscript in the Huntington Library in California and purchased the rights to the book. He added footnotes and an index.

Doors will open at 2:30 p.m. with the presentation at 3:30 p.m.

A soup and salad meal will be held at 4:30 p.m.

Reservations are required. The fee is $10 per person which includes the meal and the lecture.

Make checks payable to the Deerfield Historical Society and mail to William Westover at 2242 S. R. 225, Deerfield, OH 44411. For further information, call 330-654-2199.
