The Garden Club of Kent will hold its second annual Mother's Day Hanging Basket sale from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday at the Ode to Joy, 480 Ravenna Road, Streetsboro.
In addition, the club's annual plant sale, at the Ode to Joy, will be open to the public from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. May 24 to 26. Plants for sale will include locally grown garden vegetables, flowers, perennials, herbs and hanging baskets.
Patrons' Night, from 5 to 8 p.m. May 23, includes first choice of plants, musical entertainment and complimentary refreshments. Pre-sale tickets are required to attend Patron's Night.
Plant sale tickets cost $10 each but are redeemable for $10 worth of plants on any day of the sale. They are available from members or by calling 330-677-2279. The club accepts cash, checks and credit cards.
The Garden Club of Kent, a not-for-profit organization, supports the community of Kent by offering the Paul and Leah Houser Award which promotes community beautification.
The award recognizes exceptional contributions toward the beautification of Portage County communities, with emphasis on Kent. Recent awardees have been The Ron Burbick Foundation, The Davey Tree Expert Co., Country Elegance Assisted Living, Visconti Corp., Dale Adams Enterprises, Kent State University, Robinson Memorial Hospital, Kent Free Library, and Hometown Bank.
The club encourages the public to nominate someone for the Houser award. Nomination forms are available on the website gardenclubofkent.org/awards.
In addition, the club has donated plants to Habitat for Humanity, Freedom House, Miller House, United Disability Services, and Kevin Coleman Foundation.
Proceeds from the Mother's Day Hanging Basket sale and the annual plant sale support scholarships for students studying horticulture or conservation. Recent scholarship awardees are Hannah Schaefer, Nicole Lynne Clegg, William Suplet, Sean Kretovics, Kodi Stebner, Madalynn Karlovec, Justin Doty and Joshua Amrheim.
