The Portage County Retired Teachers Association recently honored their 2013 scholarship winners.
The PCRTA Future Teacher Scholarships, which began in the early '90s with a single $300 award, has grown to include $6,000 in awards this year.
Scholarships were awarded to six recent Portage County high school graduates who will be entering the field of education this fall.
These scholarships are funded through member donations, memorials and money earned by PCRTA members serving as proctors for the Northeast Ohio Medical University in Rootstown.
Awarding the scholarships at the luncheon was PCRTA Scholarship Chairman Jim Montaquila. One of the six scholarships also was awarded to a Streetsboro student by Lowell Myers in memory of his deceased wife, Carol Myers, who taught in Streetsboro for many years.
As an additional highlight for all PCRTA members and guests in attendance, each student introduced themselves and their family members and participated in a question and answer period that allowed everyone to better know these future teachers of tomorrow.
