"Hope in a Handbag," the fundraiser for the Safer Futures domestic violence shelter and its programs, is set for Oct. 18 at the Fairways at Twin Lakes, 1519 Overlook Road, Kent. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
In its third year, the silent auction of donated designer and gently used handbags and other items raises money to fund the programs of the only domestic violence shelter in Portage County.
In previous years the event has made more than $8,000 annually, said Shelley Marsh, director of domestic violence and visitation services.
"It means we can continue to provide all the services to the victims and children who come into the shelter, provide them with the support services they need, help them set up their own place once they leave the shelter. We can better provide for them at the shelter," said Marsh.
The shelter, which has been operating for more than 20 years, and its outreach program serve more than 1,200 victims and children a year, Marsh said.
The event is set for 7 to 9:30 p.m. and features a silent auction of gift baskets in addition to handbags. Desserts and light appetizers will be served.
Because of the popularity of the event, reservations are being limited to 200 tickets which are $25 per person and can be reserved by calling 330-673-2500, and paid for at the door.
Marsh said Safer Futures is still accepting donations of designer "or gently used, nice bags" for the auction. Donations may be made by calling Marsh at 330-673-2500 or by dropping them off at Suite 221 at 705 Oakwood St. in Ravenna.
Marsh said people still have the opportunity to become an event sponsor. Call Marsh for information.
