The Portage County Historical Society will celebrate African American History Month at 2 p.m. Feb. 22.
The featured speaker will be Herman Lee Counts, a longtime activist of the Skeels community in Ravenna. Mr. Counts was born in 1921 in Pomaria, S.C. After attending school, he entered World War II and was stationed in Europe.
He moved to Ravenna in 1953 and retired from Rockwell International in 1978. Mr. Counts has been a member of the Allen Chapel A.M.E. Church for 59 years. He will share portions of his life about living in the South, being a WWII soldier, working in the Skeels community, and the importance of his faith.
The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served. Doors will open at 1:30 p.m. The historical society is located at 6549 N. Chestnut St., in Ravenna.
